Anton Gaaei

Anton Gaaei's move to Ajax turned into the biggest sale in Viborg FF's history: the Danish club received roughly €4.5 million for a player who had only made his Superliga debut in April 2022. A regular starter for Viborg through the 2022–23 season, when he made 37 appearances across all competitions, Gaaei signed a five-year contract at Ajax in August 2023 and made his competitive debut against Fortuna Sittard that September, spending part of his first season out on loan with Jong Ajax in the Eerste Divisie.

His breakthrough at senior level came with a flair for the spectacular. In April 2024 he scored his first goal for Ajax, a volley against Go Ahead Eagles that won him the club's Goal of the Month award, and he collected the same prize again in December that year for a long-range strike against FC Utrecht. A few months earlier, in August 2024, he had already made his mark in a different way, converting the decisive penalty in a Europa League qualifying shootout against Panathinaikos that ran to 34 spot-kicks, one of the longest in the sport's history.

By February 2026 Gaaei had reached 100 appearances for Ajax's first team, earning a place in the club's Club of 100, and has continued to add to his goal tally from defence. His form brought international recognition too, with a first cap for Denmark's senior side in 2025 following spells with the under-21 and under-20 teams. Silverware has proved harder to come by: Ajax reached the KNVB Cup final in the 2024–25 season but lost to PSV.
