About the player
Benjamin Büchel took the long way to Vaduz. Born in Ruggell, he came up through the youth ranks at FC Ruggell, FC Widnau and USV Eschen/Mauren, lifting the Liechtenstein Cup with the latter in 2011–12 before moving on to FC Thalwil. From there he crossed to England, signing for AFC Bournemouth in August 2012, though the deal never produced a first-team appearance for the Cherries. Instead, Büchel spent the following seasons out on loan, passing through Dorchester Town, Poole Town, Havant & Waterlooville and Welling United to get minutes on non-league pitches.
Bournemouth released him in May 2015, and he left Oxford in 2017 and returned to FC Thalwil for a season before joining FC Vaduz on a free transfer in July 2018.
Vaduz is where Büchel has built his reputation. He has won the Liechtenstein Cup in three straight seasons, 2021–22 through 2023–24, and been named Liechtenstein Footballer of the Year in 2022, 2023 and 2024. On the international stage, he made his debut for Liechtenstein back in November 2008, coming on as a substitute against Slovakia, and has since gone on to earn 82 caps for his country. A small detail sets him apart between the posts: Büchel plays in OG1 Siege gloves.
