About

The Swiss Super League operates at the pinnacle of domestic football in Switzerland. Founded in 1898, it has evolved through several name changes, including Serie A and Nationalliga A, before adopting its current title in 2003.

A key feature distinguishing the competition is its structural format. Since the 2023-24 season, the league employs a "Scottish Model." After a regular season of 33 matches, the twelve participating clubs split into two groups: the Championship Group comprising the top six teams, and the Relegation Group containing the bottom six. Each group then plays five additional matches to determine the final standings. The champion is crowned as the leading side within the Championship Group.

FC Vaduz, a club from neighbouring Liechtenstein, participates in the league but cannot be promoted or qualify for European competitions based on league position. However, they remain subject to relegation. The bottom-placed team in the Relegation Group drops directly to the Challenge League. The eleventh-placed team enters a playoff against the runner-up of the second tier to avoid elimination.

Historical dominance varies among the participants. Grasshopper Club Zürich holds the record for the most titles with twenty-seven wins. FC Basel secured eight consecutive championships between 2009 and 2017, while BSC Young Boys claimed four in a row from 2018 to 2022.

The Super League differs significantly from the Swiss Cup in terms of progression. League performance dictates entry into the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. Conversely, the Swiss Cup winner secures a spot in the Europa League regardless of their league standing. The cup competition remains an open knockout tournament involving teams from all levels of Swiss football.

Recent reforms have adjusted the number of clubs. The league expanded back to twelve teams following fan protests against earlier playoff systems. Current sponsorship is provided by Brack, following previous agreements with axpo, Raiffeisen, and Credit Suisse.
