The 1. Liga Promotion operates as the third tier of Swiss football, positioned below the Super League and the Challenge League. While the Challenge League bans reserve teams, this division permits them, creating a distinct structural difference from the professional tier above. This arrangement allows clubs such as Basel II to compete at this level without being eligible for promotion or the Swiss Cup.
The league adopted its current unified national format in 2012, replacing the previous regionalized third tier. Teams play a double round-robin schedule over 34 matches between August and May. The champion secures direct promotion to the Challenge League, provided they meet professional licensing standards. If the winner is a reserve side, the promotion spot transfers to the next eligible team. The runner-up faces a two-legged play-off against the ninth-placed Challenge League side, while the bottom two teams are relegated to the 1. Liga Classic.
Sponsorship support comes from Hoval, a heating technology company, which has backed the league since July 2023. The competition is governed by the Swiss Football Association, while the professional tiers fall under the Swiss Football League. Attendance figures remain significantly lower than in the second tier, reflecting the semi-professional nature of the division. Stade Lausanne Ouchy holds the record for modern success with five titles, though the most recent champion is Étoile Carouge FC.
The league serves as a critical bridge for clubs aiming to reach the professional levels. It provides a platform for development while maintaining a clear pathway for promotion through strict eligibility rules. The presence of reserve teams adds a layer of complexity to the standings, as their participation does not guarantee advancement to the higher tiers. This structure ensures that only fully independent clubs can achieve the highest honour of promotion. The season concludes with the relegation of the lowest-ranked sides, maintaining the integrity of the league system.
