Derek Austin Cornelius

Derek Cornelius' first senior international goal came nine years into his career: against Wales at Swansea.com Stadium, he stepped up to a free-kick in the 41st minute.

He left Ajax, Ontario for VfB Lübeck's youth ranks, then moved to VfR Neumünster, where he was converted from a forward into a centre-back. From there he went to FK Javor Ivanjica in Serbia before Vancouver Whitecaps FC brought him back across the Atlantic in 2019. A loan at Panetolikos in Greece preceded his move to Malmö FF, where he won back-to-back Allsvenskan titles in 2023 and 2024 as well as the Svenska Cupen. Olympique de Marseille signed him in 2024, and in September 2025 he joined Rangers on a season-long loan with an option to buy — though by March 2026 reports described him struggling for minutes under Danny Röhl and being sent to the youth team.

With Canada, he has earned 48 caps and was part of the squad that took bronze at the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League Finals. He started all of Canada's group games at the 2026 World Cup, including a 6–0 win over Qatar from which he was substituted at half-time, and played in the 1–0 Round of 32 victory over South Africa. Earlier in his career, he was named Canadian Men's Youth International Player of the Year in 2018 and made the Best XI at the 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship.
