The €50m option was there, and Tottenham Hotspur left it on the table. Gedson Fernandes arrived in north London on loan from Benfica in 2020 wearing number 30, and when the spell ended the buy clause went unused.

Beşiktaş bought half of him for €16 million in 2022, and the club completed the deal in July 2025, paying Benfica a further €10 million for the remaining share. His best European run came in the 2024/25 Europa League, five goals in the competition, including two against Lugano and the winner against Lyon.

Spartak Moscow paid €20.8 million for him in 2025, a figure that can reach €28 million with bonuses. His first league goal in Russia came against Zenit Saint Petersburg in August 2025, in a match that finished 2-2, and he struck a late winner against Pari NN in the Russian Cup — a competition Spartak went on to win in 2025/26.

He came through at Benfica, played for the B side and was part of the senior squad that took the Primeira Liga title in 2018/19. That period brought the league's Best Young Player of the Month award in August 2018. Before any of it, he won the European Under-17 Championship with Portugal in 2016 and was named in the tournament's squad of the competition. His senior debut for Portugal came in September 2018 against Croatia.
