About the player
Hayate Matsuda's path to Hannover 96 ran through the club's own reserve side before he ever pulled on the first-team shirt. Born in Hakodate, he came through the JFA Academy Fukushima before turning professional with Mito HollyHock in 2021 as a designated special player. Two years later, in June 2023, he moved to Germany on loan to Hannover 96 II — a switch that would define the next stage of his career.
Across two seasons with the reserve team, Matsuda made 60 league appearances between the Regionalliga Nord and 3. Liga, scoring three goals. He was a key part of the U23 side's promotion to the 3. Liga and won the Regionalliga North title in the 2023–24 season. Those performances persuaded Hannover to make the move permanent, and in June 2025 he signed a contract with the first team running until 2028.
Since stepping up, Matsuda has established himself in the 2. Bundesliga, reaching 25 appearances and three goals for the senior side.
Internationally, Matsuda has represented Japan across several youth levels, including the U16, U17, U19 and U20 sides. He was part of the squad at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina, collecting six caps at that age group alongside four at U19 level. He has yet to be capped by the senior Japan national team.
