About the player
Leo Weinkauf's route to Hannover 96 ran through Bayern Munich without a single senior appearance to show for it. Signed by Bayern München II in 2015 and registered with the first-team squad between 2016 and 2018, he never played a league match for the senior side before moving on. He finished that spell with a runner-up medal in the Regionalliga Bayern with the second team in the 2017/18 season.
Weinkauf joined Hannover 96 on a free transfer in July 2018, but a first-team place did not follow immediately. Within a year he was loaned out to MSV Duisburg, a spell initially set for two years and then extended by a further year, keeping him away from Hannover until June 2022. Since returning, he has featured mostly for Hannover 96 II in the Regionalliga Nord and 3. Liga, with occasional call-ups to the first team.
The lower-league years have not been without reward. Weinkauf won the Regionalliga Nord title with Hannover 96 II in 2024, and his honours list stretches back further still to a B-Junioren Regionalliga Nord title with VfL Oldenburg in 2012, the club where his career began before he moved into the Werder Bremen academy as a teenager.
In January 2026, Hannover 96 extended his contract to June 2028. Every move he has made in his career, from Werder to Bayern to Hannover and on loan to Duisburg, has come as a free transfer or a loan, without a transfer fee changing hands.
