About the player
Ibrahim Buhari's route to Vienna ran through Nigerian and Swedish football before Austria Wien came calling. Born in Zaria, in Kaduna State, he began his senior career with Plateau United and stayed there until the summer of 2022, when IF Elfsborg brought him to Sweden.
The move to Elfsborg proved to be the making of him. He spent four years at the club before leaving as a free agent this past July to join Austria Wien. The transfer carried no disclosed fee, continuing a pattern from his original move north from Nigeria.
That physical presence has not yet translated into senior international recognition: although he received a call-up from the Nigeria national team in May 2022, he is still waiting for his first cap at that level. He has represented the country at youth level, however, earning a cap for the Nigeria under-23 side in March 2023 during qualifying for the 2024 Olympics.
Austria Wien now becomes the stage for the next stretch of his career, and a chance to build on the foundations laid at Elfsborg.
