About

The Austrian Football Bundesliga, or Österreichische Fußball-Bundesliga, stands as the premier football division in Austria. The modern professional league was established by the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) in 1974, replacing the amateur Nationalliga and beginning play in the 1974/75 season. The league organization became a self-governing entity in 1991. The competition features 12 teams. The season format consists of a 22-match double round-robin regular season, followed by a split phase. The top six teams enter the Championship Round (Meisterschaftsrunde), and the bottom six enter the Relegation Round (Klassenerhaltungsrunde). In these split phases, teams play a further 10 matches each. Points from the regular season are halved (rounded down) before the split phase begins. The winner of the Championship Round is crowned champion. The team finishing last in the Relegation Round is directly relegated to the 2. Liga. The 2. Liga champion is promoted to the Bundesliga, provided they are not a reserve team. The most successful club in Austrian football history is SK Rapid Wien with 32 titles. FK Austria Wien is second with 24 titles. FC Red Bull Salzburg has won 17 titles, dominating much of the 21st century. The current reigning champions are LASK, who won their second title in the 2025–26 season. Notable historical context includes the pre-1974 era where the championship was often dominated by Viennese clubs, with LASK becoming the first non-Viennese winner in 1965. The league has undergone several sponsorship name changes, including tipp3 Bundesliga, Tipico Bundesliga, and Admiral Bundesliga. Unlike the Austrian Cup (ÖFB-Cup), which is a knockout tournament open to all levels and offers a Europa League spot, the Bundesliga determines the primary European qualifiers, including Champions League and Europa League places based on final standings.
