About

Regional League — South

The Regional League South is a semi-professional football competition forming part of the Austrian football pyramid. Established as a distinct division for the 2026–27 season, it operates below the 2. Liga and serves as the fourth level of the national system. The league was created through a structural reform that consolidated clubs from Carinthia and Styria.

The competition features sixteen teams split evenly between the two states. The season structure is divided into two distinct phases. During the autumn phase, clubs compete within their respective state associations. This period concludes with state-level playoffs to determine the progression teams. The spring phase focuses on promotion and relegation stakes.

The top four teams from each state enter a promotion playoff to identify the division champion. This winner then faces a champion from another regional division in a two-legged tie. The two victors of these cross-regional matches secure advancement to the 2. Liga. Conversely, the bottom four teams from each state participate in a qualification playoff. The final placed team from each state is relegated to its corresponding state league, whether the Kärntner Liga or the Steirische Landesliga.

The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) oversees the competition. While the league itself is new, it draws history from the former Regionalliga Central. Previous champions of that predecessor structure include TSV Hartberg, who won the title five times, and LASK, with three victories. ASK Voitsberg claimed the last edition before the reorganization. The current setup ensures a clear path for promotion while maintaining competitive integrity across the southern Austrian football landscape.
