In 1991, the club won the Kärntner Meister title. It did not open the door any further: in the promotion play-off for a place in the Second Bundesliga, Bleiburg lost out to both SV Ried and SV Flavia Solva Wagna. The club has stayed at Carinthian level since.

The club was formed on 10 April 1946 on the initiative of Karl Blaha, a war veteran left disabled by his service, and it has carried the same name, Sportverein Grenzland Bleiburg, ever since. Its ground, the Karl-Kornberger-Stadion, went up in 1954. Bleiburg first reached the Kärntner Liga in 1977, and broke through to the Regionalliga Mitte in 1996.

In 2011 the board resigned and Daniel Vriessnig , a former player, took over as chairman. In the 2025/26 season, Bleiburg competes in the Regionalliga Süd, currently sitting fifth in the table.
