Hartberg Am

Markus Schopp has managed Hartberg in three separate spells — 2018 to 2021, 2022 to 2024, and again from 2026. He took charge as Hartberg entered the Bundesliga for the first time, and by the end of that run the team had qualified for the UEFA Europa League. Before him, Christian Ilzer had steered the side to the Regionalliga Mitte title and then to second place in the second tier, which put promotion within reach; Ilzer now works at Hoffenheim.

The promotion itself did not come cleanly. Hartberg finished the 2017/18 season in a position to go up, but the top-flight licence arrived only after a court case concluded in May 2018.

The club came out of a gymnastics and sports association in the eastern Styrian town of Hartberg, founded on 29 April 1946, and spent most of its life moving between the third and second divisions.

The blue and white are the town's colours rather than a club invention.

The Steirer-Derby brings Sturm Graz and Grazer AK to town, with SV Lafnitz a closer and smaller argument. Cup football has its own rules: Hartberg reached the semi-finals of the Austrian Cup in 1994/95 and again in 2021/22, then went one further in 2024/25, losing the final to Wolfsberger AC.
