WSG Wattens
Club · Austria · Bundesliga
The football side became part of the Werksportgemeinschaft Swarovski Wattens. It won Regionalliga West that same season and went up to the Nationalliga.
Between 1971 and 1985 Wattens did not exist as an independent first-team entity at all: it merged with FC Wacker Innsbruck into a syndicate, SSW Innsbruck. That combined side won five Austrian championships — 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1977 — and four cups, the last of them in 1979. When the syndicate was dissolved in 1985, Wattens went back to the regional leagues and stayed there. The trophies remain on the club's honours list; nothing resembling them has been won since.
The climb back was measured in third-tier titles: Regionalliga West in 1989, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2016. The last of those finally led somewhere. Promotion to the Bundesliga came in 2019 as champions of the second division, 34 years after the split.
It also cost the club its home. The Gernot Langes Stadion in Wattens holds 5,500 and does not meet Bundesliga requirements, so since 2019 the green-and-whites have played their home matches at the Tivoli Stadion Tirol in Innsbruck, capacity 16,008 — a ground they share with the city they once merged into.
That city is also the opposition. Wacker Innsbruck is the other half of the Tiroler Derby, a fixture between a works club from a valley town of a few thousand and the club it spent 14 years fused with. The table goes out of the window in those games.
