Ian Glavinić

The centre-back arrived in Philadelphia in December 2024 on a one-year loan from Newell's Old Boys, with an option to buy attached. Barely four months later, his season was over: a torn meniscus in April 2025 sent him for surgery and onto the season-ending injury list. The Union went on to win the Supporters' Shield that year, finishing top of the MLS regular season.

He came up at Newell's, joining the academy in 2017 after starting out at Peñarol de Elordondo in his home town. He made his Primera División debut for the club in August 2022 against Godoy Cruz, and signed his first professional contract that October. In 2024 he played 18 matches for Newell's — his last full season in Argentina.

A move to Brazil nearly happened first. In September 2024 he was linked with Vasco da Gama, but the transfer window closed before anything was agreed, and the deal fell through.

Glavinić holds both Argentinian and Croatian citizenship, the latter through his father. At international level, he was called up to the Argentina under-23 side by Javier Mascherano in March 2023 for friendlies against Mexico. He did not appear in the squads named for the 2024 Preolímpico Sudamericano, the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games.

The terms of his move to Philadelphia were reported at roughly €1m for the loan itself, with a purchase obligation of $2.5m plus 20 per cent of any future sale.
