About the player
Maas Willemsen studied political philosophy at Radboud University Nijmegen while working his way through De Graafschap's academy. He had arrived at the Doetinchem club in 2014 after starting out at SV Harfsen and FC Twente, and rose to become youth captain before making his senior debut in the 2022–23 season.
Over three seasons at De Graafschap, Willemsen made 33 league appearances and scored twice, playing a part in the club's push for promotion to the Eredivisie. The promotion did not materialise, and when his contract expired he moved on a free transfer. Reports in May 2025 named sc Heerenveen as the leading candidate for his signature, and the move was confirmed on 1 July 2025.
Accounts differ on his stronger foot — some sources list him as right-footed, others left. He has yet to add a first title or individual honour to his record, and has not been capped at senior or youth international level for the Netherlands, though he was reportedly considered for an Oranje under-17 selection process earlier in his career.
