About the player
Marcus Sandberg took the long route to a first-team goal, moving from Rönnängs FF into IFK Göteborg's system in 2008 and needing until 2009 to make his senior debut. A loan to Ljungskile SK in the 2012 Superettan season gave him experience, and back at IFK Göteborg he built a record his club still keeps: the lowest goals-conceded average per European tie in its history, 0.50. He added two Svenska Cupen wins across his time there, in 2012–13 and 2014–15, though his Allsvenskan appearances for the club stopped at 43.
The move to Norway in January 2016 changed the shape of his career. A free transfer took him to Vålerenga, and when he left for Stabæk in August 2018 he still had six months on his contract. Stabæk kept him until January 2023, when he joined HamKam on another free transfer. HamKam handed him a two-year deal that has since been extended to the end of 2027.
Sandberg qualifies for both Sweden, where he was born, and Norway, through residency, but he has stayed on the fringes of both national set-ups: one cap for Sweden's under-19s and three for the under-21s, nothing at senior level. Across his Eliteserien career at Vålerenga, Stabæk and HamKam he has passed 130 appearances.
