About the player
Masaya Okugawa started out in Kyoto Sanga's youth ranks and made his senior debut for the club in May 2015. Within weeks he had left Japan altogether, moving to Red Bull Salzburg for a fee reported at around ¥100 million, though the club never confirmed the exact figure. The Austrian side eased him in gradually, sending him out on loan to FC Liefering, SV Mattersburg and Holstein Kiel before he settled into the first-team picture. The patience paid off: Okugawa won the Austrian Bundesliga and the Austrian Cup with Salzburg in the 2019–20 season, and that November he scored his first Champions League goal, against Bayern Munich.
Bielefeld's relegation in 2023 ended that spell, and he joined FC Augsburg as a free agent. A loan to Hamburger SV filled the second half of the 2023–24 campaign before he returned to Augsburg, then in January 2025 he went back to where it all began, signing permanently for Kyoto Sanga.
Okugawa has represented Japan at under-17, under-18 and under-20 level and was called up to the senior national squad in November 2020, though a full debut has not followed.
