Top tier of the Japanese professional football league system, the J1 League operates under a double round-robin format. Each of the 20 clubs plays 38 matches, facing every opponent both home and away. The structure is simple: the team finishing with the most points is crowned champion, a system in place since 2017 which replaced previous multi-stage setups with playoffs.
Promotion and relegation link the J1 League with the second tier, J2. The bottom three teams in J1 are automatically relegated to J2. Above them, the top two teams in J2 secure automatic promotion, while sides finishing third through sixth enter a playoff tournament for the final promoted spot. This mechanism ensures movement between the levels, with the relegation playoff involving the 16th-placed J1 team having been abolished in 2023.
A distinctive feature of the J1 League, compared to other Asian leagues, is its adherence to the 'Hundred Year Vision'. This mandates strong community ties and local government support for clubs, aiming for 100 professional clubs by 2092. The league is sponsored by Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, known as the Meiji Yasuda J1 League. Kashima Antlers hold the record for success with nine titles, including the 2025 championship. Vissel Kobe won the previous two seasons, in 2023 and 2024.
Unlike the Emperor's Cup, which is a knockout tournament open to all levels, the J1 is a closed league format. Continental qualification is determined based on final standings rather than cup success. The league was formed to replace the amateur Japan Soccer League, establishing a professional structure that has evolved through various reforms, including the introduction of the second division in 1999 and the renaming to J1 League in 2015.
