Mito Hollyhock

Omiya Ardija are close enough on the map for the fixture to matter in Mito. The Kantō region is crowded with clubs, and proximity does the work that history has not yet had time to do.

The club grew out of a factory side. Workers at the food company Prima Ham put together Prima Aseno Football Club in 1990, and it carried the company's name through the regional divisions, taking the Ibaraki Prefecture first division in 1992 and again the year after, then the Kantō Soccer League Division 1 in 1995. FC Mito, founded in 1994, was a separate project entirely until the two merged in 1997 and became Mito HollyHock.

Hollyhock comes from the mitsuba aoi, the three hollyhock leaves of the Tokugawa crest, and the Tokugawa ruled the Mito domain. Blue and yellow are the traditional colours, although the kit is often blue and white.

Yasuhito Endo spent 1999 and 2000 at Mito before moving to Gamba Osaka. Marcus Túlio Tanaka came on loan in 2003. Junya Ito was here in 2010.

Naoki Mori, who played for the club himself, took the J2 League title in 2025. That was the first promotion to J1 in the club's history.
