Yokohama F. Marinos beat Mito Hollyhock 2-0 at Nissan Stadium in the J-League 1 regular season, round 8, on Saturday. The hosts kept a clean sheet and took all three points from a match where they worked their chances without much fuss. Jeison Quiñónes opened the scoring early and Riku Yamane added a second late on.
The first goal came in the eighth minute when Quiñónes found the net. To be fair, Marinos had been moving the ball better for most of the opening period, pressing higher up the pitch. Mito sat deeper, trying to contain the space behind their back line. The visitors had their moments in transition but couldn't test the goalkeeper properly.
Two yellow cards appeared around the quarter-hour mark, first to Kei Chinen and Yasuki Kimoto both in the 25th minute. The game settled into a rhythm after that. Marinos made several substitutions through the second half, bringing on Kotaro Uchinо at 45 minutes, then three changes at 54 and 66. The statistics tell a straightforward story. Both sides shared possession evenly at 50 per cent, but the difference showed in the final third. Marinos took 10 shots with five on target, while Mito managed only five shots with two on target. The hosts created three big chances; the visitors created none. Shots accuracy sat at 45 per cent for Marinos against 25 per cent for Mito.
Yamane's goal in the 83rd minute sealed the result, though by then the match was already decided. The visitors had a yellow card for Takumi Mase in the 82nd minute, just before the late strike. Takuya Kida also picked up a booking for Mito in the 77th minute. Marinos drew level on aerial duels at 30 each, another sign of how even the physical battle was.
The win keeps Marinos in ninth place with 11 points from seven games. Mito remain 11th with nine points after seven matches. The hosts had lost their previous home game 2-3 to Urawa, so this result brings a degree of consistency back. Mito's run of draws and narrow defeats continues without changing their position on the table.
