Avispa Fukuoka

Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest city and the island's gateway, and for a long stretch it had no top-flight football club of its own. The team that eventually filled that gap did not grow out of the city at all. It began in 1982 in Fujieda, in Shizuoka, among employees of a security firm called Chūō Bōhan, and played under the company's name for more than a decade. Fukuoka acquired it in 1994, the way a city acquires a factory: the club was moved north, given the name Fukuoka Blux, and asked to become local.

The name it carries now arrived in 1996, after a trademark dispute with Brooks Brothers made Blux untenable. Avispa is Spanish for wasp, which explains the hornet in the branding and the nickname Avi that the stands settled on.

Promotion came first. Winning the Japan Football League's top division in 1995 took the club into the J.League, and among those who got them over the line was Hugo Maradona, the younger brother of the Argentine, who spent that title season in Japan.

Then came a very long wait. The trophy that matters most to supporters in Hakata-ku is the J.League Cup of 2023, won by beating Urawa Red Diamonds 2–1 in the final — the club's first major honour in the professional era, nearly three decades after it reached that level. Home games are played at Best Denki Stadium, a 22,563-seat ground that has changed sponsor names more than once.

The most recognisable figure to pass through remains Pierre Littbarski, the German World Cup winner, who managed Avispa across 2007 and 2008 — a period the club spent chasing the top flight rather than holding it. He is still the name outsiders reach for when Fukuoka comes up.
