About

The WE League stands as the premier tier of women's association football in Japan. Officially launched on June 3, 2020, it replaced the semi-professional Nadeshiko League Division 1 to become the nation's first fully professional women's league. The competition operates as a closed system with no automatic promotion or relegation, ensuring stability for its professional clubs. This structural choice contrasts with the traditional open pyramid model seen in many other football nations.

The season follows a double round-robin format, where clubs play each other home and away. There are no playoffs; the champion is determined by the highest points total at the end of the regular season. The schedule runs from autumn to spring, aligning with European leagues rather than the domestic calendar used by the men's J.League. Clubs must employ at least 15 players on full professional contracts, though there is no salary cap. The Japan Football Association provides subsidies to help attract international talent to the league.

Distinctive features include mandatory "WE ACTION DAY" community initiatives focused on social issues and inclusivity. The league currently comprises 12 clubs, though only a selection participates in the current campaign. Notable participants include Albirex Niigata Women, Cerezo Osaka Women, and Elfen Saitama Women. INAC Kobe Leonessa holds two titles, having won the inaugural 2021–22 season and the 2025–26 campaign. Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies also hold two championships from consecutive seasons in 2022–23 and 2023–24. Nippon TV Tokyo Verdy Beleza claimed the 2024–25 title. The league's design prioritises long-term professional sustainability over competitive movement between tiers.
