About the player

Doi Shōma spent thirteen years at Kashima Antlers, where he made 464 appearances and scored 75 goals. He arrived through the club's own pipeline, having joined the Kashima Antlers Jr. Youth setup in 2005 after starting out at OSA Fortuna Oyama, before making the step to the first team in 2011.

At Kashima he won the J1 League in 2016, the Emperor's Cup the same year, the Japanese Super Cup and the Suruga Bank Championship twice. His name is also tied to a piece of FIFA Club World Cup history: in the 2016 semi-final against Atlético Nacional, he scored the first penalty ever awarded after a VAR review. Two years later he was named Man of the Match in the group-stage win over Guadalajara, part of the same Club World Cup campaign in which Kashima's squad won the AFC Champions League. In 2019 he was given the J1 League Outstanding Player Award, and in 2017 he earned two caps for the Japan national team.

In July 2024, Doi left Kashima on a free transfer to join Montedio Yamagata, the club of his home prefecture. Since then he has been a regular starter in the J2 League, continuing to contribute goals and assists for Montedio across the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons.
