About the player
Soner Gönül came through Galatasaray's academy, staying with the club until 2017 without breaking into the first team. His senior career began away from Istanbul, on loan at Erbaaspor in the fourth-tier TFF 3. Lig. From there he worked his way up through the lower divisions: a season at Başkent Şafakspor, which became Başkent Akademi Spor Kulübü partway through, and then two years at Keçiörengücü in the TFF 1. Lig.
He joined Samsunspor in July 2021. He became a regular in the left-back position and was part of the side that won the TFF 1. Lig title in the 2022–23 season, securing promotion to the Süper Lig.
He then signed for Iğdır FK as a free agent on a one-year deal, with the move confirmed in July 2026.
Gönül has not been capped by Turkey's senior national team, though he did represent Galatasaray's under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League during his time in their academy.
