The Süper Lig sits at the top of the Turkish football pyramid. It operates as a double round-robin system with 18 teams, having reduced from 20 in the 2025–26 season. Players contest 34 matches each over the course of the campaign.
Success on the pitch secures access to European competitions. The league champion and runner-up qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with the first place entering the League Phase directly and the second taking part in the Play-offs. Third place earns a spot in the UEFA Europa League, while fourth goes to the UEFA Europa Conference League. The Turkish Cup winner also qualifies for the Europa League. Three teams face relegation to the TFF 1. Lig, where the top two are promoted directly and a third spot is decided via playoffs among the next four teams.
The competition is characterized by the dominance of the "Big Three" from Istanbul. Galatasaray holds the record for the most titles with 26, followed by Fenerbahçe with 19 and Beşiktaş with 16. This hierarchy defines the landscape, though the league has also been marked by political interference, match-fixing scandals, and pitch invasions.
Sponsorship has changed over time, moving from state lottery operator Spor Toto to the current title sponsor, Trendyol. The league is organized by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), which replaced the National Division (Millî Küme) and the Turkish Football Championship when the competition was established in 1959. The structure ensures that the strongest clubs compete for domestic glory and continental qualification annually.
