The club's founding took two attempts. A first merger of İdmangücü, Martıspor and Karadenizgücü, agreed in June 1966, was blocked in court after İdmanocağı objected. The dispute was settled by folding all four clubs together, and on 2 August 1967 Trabzonspor was registered for good.

The city has never let go of it. Trabzonspor has stayed in Trabzon through every era, and when the youth setup split off as a separate club, 1461 Trabzon, in 2012, the first team carried on as before.

Locally the shirt is enough of an identifier: claret and sky blue, worn in vertical stripes, gave the club its nickname among supporters, Bordo-Mavililer. The wider Turkish game knows it as the Black Sea Storm, a name that also marks out its derby with Samsunspor as the Karadeniz Derbisi.
