Gençlerbirliği go into this season. The closest the club has come was third place, in 1965-66 and again in 2002-03.

The gap makes more sense once the calendar is laid out. Gençlerbirliği's two national championships, in 1941 and 1946, belong to the amateur era that preceded the professional league's launch in 1959. The Turkish Cup came later and only twice, in 1987 and 2001. Regionally the picture is different: nine Ankara Football League titles make the club the competition's record holder.

Founded on 14 March 1923, the club marked its centenary in 2023. Only once, in 1959, did the team turn out in white, before red and black reclaimed the shirt for good.
