About the player
Takumi Kato took an unusual route into Japanese professional football, spending his formative years not at a club academy but at Waseda University. Playing there from 2018 to 2021, he featured in the Waseda-Keio university rivalry and scored his first goal for the team against Kanto Gakuin University in September 2020, part of a university career that shaped him before he turned professional.
Kato joined Shimizu S-Pulse in June 2021 straight after graduating. A first loan took him to SC Sagamihara for the 2022 J3 League season, where he scored four goals in ten appearances. He returned to Shimizu before being loaned out again, back to SC Sagamihara for 2025, where he made 21 league appearances and scored twice, adding a further goal in three Emperor's Cup outings.
In June 2026, Kato's time at Shimizu S-Pulse came to an end when he transferred to Kyoto Sanga. The move took him into the J1 League for the first time in his career.
