1º de Agosto has taken the Girabola title thirteen times. The Angolan league had rarely produced a treble, and the Luanda side did it.

The football section grew out of a sports club founded on 1 August 1977. Red and black have stayed the colours throughout. In continental competition the club's furthest run remains the 1998 final of the CAF Cup Winners' Cup, a result it has not matched since, though a semi-final in the CAF Champions League in 2018 came closer than most Angolan clubs manage.

The rivalries carry their own names. Games against Petro de Luanda, the club tied to the state oil company, are known simply as the Clássico; matches with GD Interclube, representing the police, are billed as the Dérbi Militar-Policial. Both fixtures draw on institutional loyalties that go back decades, and both have shaped as much of the club's identity as its trophies.

Zito Luvumbo came through the academy before his move to Europe, one of a line of players the club produced rather than bought, and his departure fit a pattern more established sides in Angola have grown used to seeing repeated. The club moved into the Estádio França Ndalu in Cassequel after its completion in December 2023, leaving behind the far larger Estádio 11 de Novembro it had long used for its biggest matches.

What the club has not managed is a run in the CAF Champions League that goes further than the last four, and thirteen league titles at home have yet to be matched by a continental trophy since that final in 1998.
