Dortmund had waited a long time for that run. Between the championships of 1956, 1957 and 1963 and the one Hitzfeld delivered in 1995, no title came.

Nine years later, under different management, Dortmund beat RB Leipzig 4-1 to lift the same trophy again. The cup has given the club its cleanest statements: Werder Bremen were beaten 4-1 in 1989, and Alemannia Aachen 2-0 back in 1965, the first of the five Pokal wins.

None of it looked likely at the start. They wore blue and white stripes then. The black and yellow arrived in 1913, and it has not changed since.
