Bristol City Women reached the Football Association (FA) Women's Super League by winning the second tier outright, taking the FA Women's Championship in 2022–23 and going straight back up for 2023–24. It was the club's second stint at the top after being one of the eight founding members of the FA Women's Super League in 2011, a place lost twice, in 2015 and again in 2021.

The club did not start out under this name or this badge. It began in 1998 as Bristol Rovers W.F.C., born of a merger between the Rovers girls' set-up and the Welsh club Cable-Tel L.F.C. A break from Bristol Rovers in 2005 brought a new identity, Bristol Academy W.F.C., and it was only in 2016, on affiliating with Bristol City, that the team took the "Robins" nickname from the men's side.

Bristol Rovers Women, the club it split from, remain the opponent for the Bristol derby.
