Newcastle sits on the other side of the Tyne-Wear derby, and the fixture has outgrown its own division: in November 2025 it drew 18,972 through the turnstiles.

The club began in 1989 as a five-a-side outfit called The Kestrels, taking the field for the first time that July against Darlington Ladies. A merger in 2000 with an independent Sunderland Ladies side, and with the men's club, gave the team its current identity, though it ran its own finances from 2004 after the men's side hit trouble, and was only folded back into the Sunderland A.F.C. structure in 2013. It took the Sunderland name in full, as Sunderland Association Football Club Women, in 2022.

A cup final against Arsenal in 2009 ended 2–1 the wrong way. Promotion back came in 2021. This April, Bay Collective, backed by Sixth Street Partners, took an 80 per cent stake in the women's team, with the parent club keeping the rest.
