The ground on Leckwith Road opened in 2009, built for £50m to replace Ninian Park across the road, which had stood since 1910. The new bowl holds 33,280, though only 26,828 of those are seats.

The club that moved in began as Riverside A.F.C. in 1899 and took the city's name in 1908, adopting blue and white the same year.

Everything the club is known for outside Wales rests on one afternoon in 1927, when Cardiff beat Arsenal 1–0 at Wembley and took the FA Cup out of England — the only time that has happened. Fred Keenor lifted it as captain. The same year brought the Charity Shield, won 2–1 against Corinthians, and another Welsh Cup. Two years earlier the club had lost the 1925 final to Sheffield United by the same 1–0 scoreline, so the 1927 win was a second attempt rather than a first arrival.

The Welsh Cup is where the numbers pile up: 22 wins, the first in 1912, the last in 1977, with a run through the late 1960s and early 1970s when Cardiff took it in four consecutive seasons from 1968. Domestic league honours are thinner — the Second Division title in 1921 and Third Division South in 1947.

Fred Stewart managed from 1912 to 1933, which covers the promotion, the Wembley defeat and the Wembley win.

Since the 1927 final Cardiff have twice returned to a Wembley showpiece and lost both — the FA Cup in 2008 to Portsmouth, the League Cup in 2012 to Liverpool.
