Chambéry sits at the foot of the Alps, and for four decades handball has been the exception. The club traces back to 1983, when the handball sections of Stade Olympique de Chambéry and Les Amis des Écoles de Bissy merged into a single team; a management split in 1990 sent the men's side back under the Stade Olympique banner.

The academy has done more for the club's standing than any single trophy. The Coupe de France followed only in 2019, against Dunkerque, closing out a competition the club had never previously won despite the championship and the Coupe de la Ligue already on the shelf from 2001 and 2002.

Of those, the 2001 French championship stands apart as the one won ahead of Montpellier, long the dominant force in the domestic game. Matches are played at Le Phare, which holds around 4,500 for handball and considerably more when reconfigured for concerts. On the European stage, the club's high-water mark came in 2016, a run to the EHF Cup semi-finals. Domestically, the fixtures against Saint-Raphaël and Pays d'Aix carry the sharpest edge, the closest thing the Starligue has to a settled rivalry for Chambéry.
