FH Hafnarfjörður

Aron Pálmarsson left Hafnarfjörður as a teenager bound for Kiel, Barcelona and Aalborg, and in the 2007-08 season before he went, still wearing FH colours, he scored 130 goals in 22 games. In 2023 he came back, and the following year he helped the club to a championship it had not lifted since 2016.

FH grew out of a general sports club founded in Hafnarfjörður in 1929, and handball became the discipline that carried its name furthest. Seventeen national titles is a tally few Icelandic clubs can match, and the shape of it says as much as the number: a run of five championships in six years through the middle of the 2000s, then more in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016, before the title dried up until Pálmarsson's return brought it back in 2024. The cup has come to Hafnarfjörður six times, most recently in 2019, with an earlier cluster in the mid-1970s when the club was first finding its feet at the top of the table.

The team still trains and plays at Kaplakriki, in a hall that holds 3,715. FH now competes for continental places too, in the EHF European League.

None of that has cooled the local rivalry. Stjarnan sit just across the boundary in Garðabær, and Valur, the old Reykjavík power, remains the other measure FH's championship years get set against.
