Mosfellsbær did not have a purpose-built handball power when local youth grew tired of travelling to Reykjavík for organised sport, so in 1909 they put together a general sports club of their own. The handball side has spent most of its life competing against city clubs many times its size, and for a small-town team the record shows: two second-tier titles from the 1950s, a third-tier crown in 1985, and further promotions in 1993, 2007 and 2014.

It only got there once. The 1999 season brought Afturelding both the Úrvalsdeild karla title and the Icelandic Cup, a double no side from Mosfellsbær had managed before or has managed since. Bjarki Sigurðsson captained that team and finished the league as its top scorer with 169 goals, the kind of tally that still gets attached to any retelling of that season. Twenty-four years later the club added a second cup, beating FH in the 2023 final under coach Gunnar Magnússon, proof that the wait between trophies had not settled into permanence.

Matches against Fram, KR, Valur and Víkingur carry more weight than the table position alone would suggest, simply because those clubs represent the capital that Mosfellsbær sits just outside of; there is no shared nickname for these games, only the accumulated results. Afturelding also shares its women's football team with Fram, an arrangement that says something about a club still built more on cooperation than on rivalry.

Of the players who have worn the shirt, Þorsteinn Leó Gunnarsson is the one Mosfellsbær points to first now: he left for FC Porto, a step up in competition that few from this club's academy have made.
