Thor Akureyri

Þór Akureyri's women play under the joint banner KA/Þór, having taken the national championship in the 2024-2025 campaign on top of the title they won in 2021. Between those two came a cup and a Super Cup. Lydía Gunnþórsdóttir, named Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024, and Rut Arnfjörð Jónsdóttir has built well over a hundred caps for Iceland while wearing the shirt.

The men's side has had a rockier path back to relevance. For thirteen years, from 2006 to 2019, Þór fielded its handball men jointly with KA under the name Akureyri Handboltafélag, an arrangement that delivered the club's best regular-season record in the Úrvalsdeild in 2011 and a runner-up finish in the Icelandic Cup that same year. The venture broke up in 2019, and Þór has run its own men's team since, working its way up through the Second Division, which it won in 2018 while still under the joint name.

Whichever shirt is on the court, the opponent across town tends to be the same: KA, sharing the town of barely 20,000 people, remains the fixture that matters most locally, even without a name attached to it. Matches are played at Íþróttahöllin á Akureyri, a hall that holds 1,110, hardly enough to swallow the walk-up crowd on a derby night. With the women defending a double and the men still rebuilding a separate identity after the split, Akureyri's handball households have plenty to watch this season.
