Selfoss

Selfoss grew out of the youth movement that Icelandic villages leaned on in the early twentieth century to organise sport and community life together, and the club that emerged from it, founded in 1936, still carries that broad, multisport shape today, with handball run as one department under the same roof. The men's side spent decades circling the top division before winning promotion through the second tier in 2010, and it took until 2019 for the wait to end at the other level: a 3–1 win over Haukar in the final gave Selfoss its first men's championship in Olísdeildin. The women's team has had the sharper recent rise, going up in 2024 after topping the second division the year before and settling into the top flight quickly enough to finish fourth in its first season back among the elite; that same year they also took the Ragnarsmót invitational.

The two sides play in different corners of the town. The men train and compete at Sundhöll Selfoss, the town swimming hall on Tryggvagata pressed into service as a handball venue, while the women play at Selfossvöllur, which holds around 2,200 with standing room included. Both wear black and white, and both go by "Kælirnar" — the Coolers, a name the club never quite shook off after Whirlpool sponsored it for years.

Stjarnan is the name that sharpens most matches, especially on the women's side, where the two clubs' fixtures carry a different weight than the rest of the calendar even without a formal derby title attached to them.

No one associated with Selfoss travelled further than Þórir Hergeirsson, who played for the club until 1986 and later took Norway's women to Olympic and world titles as head coach — a career the town still measures its handball people against.
