Haukar

Hörður Davíð Harðarson captained Haukar for 33 years, and when the league title finally came in 2000, it closed out a run of frustration that had followed him through most of that captaincy. By the time he stepped away, he had collected 34 titles as a player, a number that says more about the club's temperament than any single trophy could.

That 2000 win opened the decade that defines Haukar in handball: seven league championships between 2000 and 2010, a stretch built by coach Viggó Herrmannsson, who stripped the squad of its "hobbyist" players and turned it into something closer to a professional operation. The club also picked up wins over FC Barcelona and US Créteil Handball in the EHF Champions League, results that stood out precisely because they weren't expected of a team from a town of Hafnarfjörður's size.

Haukar grew out of the YMCA in Hafnarfjörður, founded in 1931, though it took until 1943 for the handball side to win its first league title — the next one did not arrive for another 57 years. Home games are played at Íþróttamiðstöð Hauka, on Ásvellir, in front of a maximum of 1,800 people. Among the goalkeepers who passed through, Björgvin Páll Gústavsson stands out: an Olympic silver medallist with Iceland's national team in 2008, he spent two spells with Haukar in 2017–2018 and again in 2020, long after his caps total had climbed past 270.

Across town sits FH, the bigger of Hafnarfjörður's two clubs, and games between them are still called the Hafnarfjörður derby. Since the last league title in 2016 and the last cup in 2014, Haukar has not returned to the top of either competition, and the derby has increasingly been played from the position of the smaller side in the town.
