The Planet Group Arena holds just over 20,000, more than any of the sides KAA Gent Vrouwen actually meet week to week in the Belgian Super League Women, and the club shares that ground with the men's team it grew into. That arrangement dates to 2012, when the side, then playing as AA Gent Ladies, was folded into the structure of KAA Gent after topping the Belgian Second Division and winning promotion. Before that it had spent sixteen years under a different identity, founded in 1996 as the women's team of KSK Cercle Melle.

The cup has been kinder to Gent than the league table. In 2017 the team beat Anderlecht 3–1 to lift the Belgian Women's Cup, and two years later added a second, seeing off Standard Liège 2–0. Anderlecht remains the fixture that carries the most weight, a rivalry sharpened by the fact that Gent have had to take players and results off them to matter in the women's game.

Nicky Evrard has done more than most to give the club a face beyond Ghent, the goalkeeper's presence in goal for the Belgian national team keeping Gent's name in view even in seasons when the club itself is not. Heleen Jaques has been in charge of the first team, and in 2024 the club strengthened its defence by signing Lina Meeuwis away from Anderlecht, a small transfer with an edge to it given where the fiercest matches are still played.

Blue and white, and the Buffalos nickname, are borrowed straight from the men's side. Two Belgian Women's Cups sit in the cabinet, both won inside a three-year stretch.
