Ortisei's ice hockey side started life in 1927 as a village club before the sport had much of a footprint in Italy, and the name changed twice more over the following decades before landing on its current Ladin form, HC Gherdëina, in 2001. That last switch followed a merger with HC Selva-Wolkenstein and marked the club's identity with the language spoken across Val Gardena rather than with either town alone.
A landslide in June 1999 took out the club's old rink, the Palace Setil in Ortisei, and forced the move to Selva di Val Gardena, where the team has played since at the Stadio del Ghiaccio Pranives. The four Serie A titles, won in 1969, 1976 and then back-to-back in 1980 and 1981, sit alongside six runner-up finishes — a club that reached finals more often than it won them. Money pushed the club down to Serie B in 1986 by its own choice, a way of keeping the books straight rather than chasing results it couldn't afford; it came back up in 1992, dropped to Serie A2 later, and returned to the top flight again in 2015.
Erwin Kostner won three Scudettos wearing the red and blue before returning to coach the club, the kind of figure a small valley programme builds its identity around. The rivalry with HC Fassa carries the name Derby Ladino, the two clubs drawing on the same Ladin-speaking valleys, while matches against Ritten/Renon are known as the Derby Altoatesino.
The 2025/26 Alps Hockey League final went the Furies' way against HC Merano, completing a 4–0 sweep of the series.
