The Niedersachsen-Derby against Hannover Scorpions is the fixture that still gets circled on the calendar in Wolfsburg.

What Grizzlys Wolfsburg have instead is a history of nearly folding. Founded in 1975 as TV Jahn Wolfsburg, the club changed name and shape repeatedly through the 1980s and 1990s, becoming EHC Wolfsburg, then EC Wolfsburg, before a bankruptcy in the mid-1990s saw the fan club itself take over the operation and rename it Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg. The name was trimmed to Grizzlys Wolfsburg in 2015. A second crisis followed in 2005, when the club was forced out of the DEL over the state of its arena rather than anything that happened on the ice, and it took until 2007, and a 2. Bundesliga title, to fight back up.

Since then the closest the Grizzlys have come to a first DEL championship has been four runner-up finishes, in 2011, 2016, 2017 and 2021, each one ending without the title. The one piece of silverware they do hold is the Deutscher Eishockey-Pokal, won in 2009. On the ice, Tyler Haskins' number 10 hangs retired alongside a run of other names the club has honoured, but it is Sebastian Furchner's run of appearances that speaks to how this team has stayed together through its reinventions.
