Most of the island's football feeds up through the GFA National Training Center on Harmon Loop Road, the base the under-20 side works out of. That is where Guam U20 trains and where a squad of teenagers carries the same badge, and the same nickname, as the senior side that plays under the lights.

The team dates to 1992, and it took on the nickname 'Matao' in 2012, when the federation retired 'Chamorros' for the senior and junior sides alike. There is no separate crest for the age group; the players wear the national badge because the GFA never made one just for them.

Qualification for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup has stayed out of reach. In the 2023 qualifiers, drawn into Group C in Laos, Guam lost all four matches, conceding 27 goals and scoring once, with a 1-10 defeat to Yemen the heaviest of the round. Two years later, in Group A in Vietnam, the margins narrowed: a 3-0 loss to the hosts sat alongside a 2-2 draw with Bangladesh, a result that would have been unthinkable at the previous qualifying cycle.

The fixture that matters locally is against Northern Mariana Islands, played for the Marianas Cup. The 2024 edition went to penalties after the sides finished level 2-2 on aggregate, and Guam came out on the wrong end, 5-4. Dominic Gadia has led the side as head coach, with Michael Milner and Jeroen Bos assisting on the training pitch, and a handful of graduates have carried the shirt into professional football abroad, Jonahan Romero among them, with stops in Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and the Philippines.

27 goals conceded in four matches was the cost of that first Asian Cup qualifying campaign.
