In 1982 Barcelona came to the Emsland for a friendly.

The club was founded on 29 November 1912 as FC Amisia Meppen. It won the Amateurliga Niedersachsen in 1961 and again in 1968. What changed everything was the Oberliga Nord title in 1986–87, then the third tier: it carried Meppen into the 2. Bundesliga, where the club held on until 1998.

Toni Schumacher, a World Cup winner in 1990, finished up here.

Home is the Hänsch-Arena, 13,241 capacity, known as the Emslandstadion until the sponsor's name went up. Blue and white, hence Die Blauen; The Emslanders for the region.

Three Lower Saxony Cups have come since 1999, the most recent pair in 2021 and 2024, and a Regionalliga Nord runners-up finish in 2016–17 put the club back in the 3. Liga.
