Grounsell Park empties out for one fixture more than any other: the Jimmy Rowe Memorial Trophy against Newcastle Benfield, a local grudge match that matters more in High Heaton than most of the club's league placings. A second, looser rivalry runs against Sunderland West End, played up as a "Tyne-Wear Derby" whenever the two meet.

The club traces its roots to a side that took the field as early as 1903 and folded within a year, resigning from the Newcastle and District Amateur League that December. What became Heaton Stannington was set up properly in 1910 and, after a spell in the Tyneside Minor League from 1913, spent the following century sliding between amateur divisions whenever money ran short rather than through any grand plan. The lowest point came in 1982, when the club pulled out of the Wearside League in financial trouble, dropped into the Tyneside Amateur League and played that season simply as Heaton United before the old name came back.

Grounsell Park itself was Newton Park until 2007, when it was renamed for Bob Grounsell; the ground has held the club since 1935, after earlier years at Miller's Lane, Paddy Freeman's Park and the Coast Road. Its record crowd, 2,107, was set in 2023–24, the same season the club won the Northern League Division One play-offs, beating Birtley Town in the semi-final and West Auckland Town 3–0 in the final. That run sits alongside a Northumberland Senior Cup won on penalties against Morpeth Town in 2025, and older honours from the Northern Amateur League in the 1930s and 1980s.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang once played at the ground, turning out for Gabon's Olympic team in a 2012 friendly. More recently the shirt belonged to Jeremy Perera, a Gibraltar international who joined in 2025.
