Hemelingen

The club's roots sit in a gymnastics society, MTV Hemelingen, founded in 1858. Football did not arrive until 1904, with the founding of FC Pfeil Hemelingen, which merged with other local sides in 1909 to form Sportklub Hemelingen 09. In 1937, under the Nazi regime, the club absorbed the works sports department of Martin Brinkmann and took the name VfL Hemelingen. The club as it exists now dates from 15 November 1945, when VfL Hemelingen merged with a turnverein, the swimming club Triton, a cycling club and two further local sports clubs to form SV Hemelingen.

They play in blue and white, hence the nickname Blau-Weiß, at the Bezirkssportanlage Hemelingen, a 4,000-capacity ground. The honours board carries a Bremen championship from 1949 and Bremen Cup wins in 1951 and 1952; a runner-up finish in 1954 sent them to the German amateur championship, where they finished bottom of their group.

Nothing matched 1949 again until 2024/25, when Hemelingen won the Bremen-Liga and the Bremen Cup in the same season, a double achieved through Isa Dramé's 19 goals in 10 league games. The cup win carried them into the DFB-Pokal first round for the first time in the club's history, where Wolfsburg beat them 9-0. They defended the Bremen Cup in 2026, beating Leher TS 2-1 in the final, and returned to the DFB-Pokal to face Hannover 96. Günther and Feyyaz Tuncel, coaching the side jointly since 2012, took Hemelingen up from the lower leagues to reach that Bremen-Liga title.

He won the German championship with Werder in 1965 and the DFB-Pokal in 1961, then reached the World Cup final with West Germany in 1966 and took third place in 1970. He died in 2025.
