Malmö HP and the elite team of IFK Malmö Handboll joined forces in May 2007 to form HK Malmö. IFK Malmö Handboll brought the older pedigree into the merger, its handball section having existed since 1933 and having reached a national final in the 1956-57 Allsvenskan season, then three championship semi-finals across the 1970s, in 1972-73, 1973-74 and 1975-76.

The new club took black and white as its colours, with red worked into the kit, and settled at Baltiska Hallen, a 4,000-seat venue. It plays under a name with no nickname attached, known simply as HK Malmö.

Local rivalry runs through the Skånederbyn. On the pitch, right back Magnus Persson has represented Sweden at national team level.

HK Malmö has twice reached the final of the Swedish Championship, in 2018 and again in 2026, and lost on both occasions to IFK Kristianstad.
