HSG Graz

Graz's handball club sits in the spusu Liga this season carrying the weight of a reputation it built itself: a place that turns out national-team players faster than it can keep them. Thomas Eichberger and Daniel Dicker came through here before wearing the Austrian shirt, and both left for bigger wages elsewhere, a pattern the club has stopped fighting and started marketing.

The top flight was not always home. HSG Graz stepped down from it voluntarily in 2003, a year after winning promotion, when the finances would not stretch to cover a season at that level. The comeback took until 2017, when the club won the second division and returned to what is now the spusu Liga; that same year it also reached the final of the ÖHB Cup, losing there. The high point since came under coach Aleš Pajovič, whose side reached the quarter-finals in the 2018/19 campaign.

Since 2018 the team has played out of the Raiffeisen Sportpark, and the branding around it, "Die Hütte", has become inseparable from the club itself — the hashtag #diehüttebrennt travels with results on matchdays. The fiercest date on the calendar remains the Styrian Derby against BT Füchse, though UHK Krems, the club that has taken more than one Graz-developed player off its hands, carries its own weight as the measuring stick nobody in Styria has yet matched.

Lukas Schweighofer is the name locals reach for first: a line player raised through the Graz system into the national team, the clearest proof that the "talent factory" label is not just a slogan the club printed on a jersey.
