The age-group side did not exist to fill a fixture list on its own; it was set up by the Korea Football Association in 2002 to give young players a route into the senior team, and it found that purpose almost immediately, reaching the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship and the AFC U-19 Women's Championship in its first year. The nickname Taegeuk Nangja, "Taegeuk Ladies," borrows the flag's symbol and keeps the men's side, the Red Devils, at a distance.

What the team has produced is a pipeline. Ji So-yun came through it and went on to win the Silver Ball and Silver Shoe at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, then became the senior side's all-time top scorer. Jeon Eun-ha scored four goals at the 2012 World Cup on her way up as well. The under-20 side has done more than develop players, though: it won the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup in 2004 and again in 2013, was runner-up in 2009, and took third place in 2015 and 2019.

That 2010 World Cup run brought the team's best finish at global level, third place, built on Ji So-yun's form in front of goal. Quarter-final appearances followed in 2012 and 2014, and by 2024 the side was still reaching the knockout rounds, going out in the round of 16.

Japan remains the team's most difficult opponent, a rivalry drawn from the wider history between the two countries in East Asian women's football rather than from any one tournament, though no fixture between them carries its own name. The squad trains at the National Football Center in Paju and in Goseong County, and treats Yongin Mir Stadium, with its capacity of 37,155, as home when it plays there, without ever settling on a permanent ground of its own.

A world title at this level has so far eluded them; the third-place finish in 2010 stands as the closest the age group has come.
